A new navigation app launched earlier this month helps users save whales. Called Whale Alert, the app charts active management areas, required reporting areas, and latest warnings of the presence of North Atlantic right whales in Massachusetts Bay shipping lanes. This up to the minute report tallows vessel operators to be on the guard, and avoid collision with this endangered species. While rare, a collision can injure or kill a member of this endangered species struggling to fight extinction.
Whale Alert was developed via the collaboration of
– The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW)
– EarthNC
– The Cornell Lab of Ornithology
– University of New Hampshire Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
– Gaia GPS
– Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary
– NOAA
– US Coast G
At the time of writing, the app had 46 reviews, and a rating of 4+.
