Facebook Updates News Feed Algorithm

Facebook_news_feed

Facebook says it is working on updates to the ads algorithm. When deciding which ad to show to which groups of people, the social networking site is now placing more emphasis on feedback it receives from people about ads, including how often people report or hide an ad.

For Facebook users, this could mean that they will see ads that are increasingly relevant to them, and fewer ads that they might not be interested in.

For marketers, this means Facebook is showing ads to the people who might want to see them the most, says Facebook. Some marketers may see some variation in the distribution of their ads in the coming weeks.

Hong Ge (Engineering Manager, News Feed Ads, Facebook): We aim to show people the most relevant ads based on things such as their interests and the Pages they like. To choose the right ad, we listen to both people and marketers.

News feed is a regularly updating list of stories from friends, pages, and other connections, like groups and events, introduced by Facebook in September 2006.
